A vintage solid oak, hand carved chair by Don 'Foxman' Craven. Don Craven was one of Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson's craftsmen. He set up his own workshop in the 1960s and adopted the fox as his signature. He was the original Foxman and always carved a full seated fox with bushy tail. After Craven retired, Malcom Pipes adopted the fox signature, using just a fox mask / head.
This particular piece is a spinning chair. It has been beautifully made with adzing to the back splat and seat, which really captures the light. Craven has carved his fox signature to one front chair leg. The colour of the oak is particularly nice, and being an older piece, it has really good patination. The condition is very good with just the occasional water mark that will polish out, and a bit of wear commensurate with age and use. There's a small split in the wood on the seat that you can't really see but it can be felt when you run your fingertips over it. It's a good, solid, comfortable chair and is still very useable today as an occasional / hall / desk chair. It measures 92 cm high, the width of the seat measures 36 cm, the height of the seat is 45 cm. It's a really nice, well carved original 'Foxman' piece with a very good fox signature.
