A beautiful vintage hand carved dark oak stool / side table by Thomas 'Gnomeman' Whittaker (1910 - 1991). Whittaker signed his pieces with a carved gnome. He was inspired to use the gnome as, according to legend, a gnome is born each time an acorn germinates, and it will guard the oak tree throughout its life.
 
The stool is a really wonderful dark colour with superb patina, and it is in good condition with just a small old split to the top, a small split to one foot, some wear underneath the seat, and some restoration to the top of one leg (please see pictures), other than that there are no condition issues, just wear commensurate with age and use. A sturdy stool, these are often used as little side / lamp tables, so still very useable today. The seat height measures 41.5 cm. The top measures 46 cm x 28 cm. A beautiful, well made 'Gnomeman' piece with the signature gnome carved to one leg.
