A really rare pair of early Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson oak candlesticks. The signature mouse has been carved to only one candlestick, which was quite often the case with these earlier examples. The condition is very good with just a bit of wear commensurate with age and use. They have a few small nicks to the base and elsewhere, not really noticeable, but should be pointed out. There is also a little scorching to the candle sockets, again not really noticeable, and quite common with the earlier candlesticks that weren't fitted with iron sconces. There is a small natural knot in the oak just beneath the candle socket, I've looked at it under a magnifying glass, it is not damage, it is definitely just a bit of character in the oak. The mouse is in perfect condition with no chips or cracks. They are a beautiful colour with wonderful patina, the mouse has also been excellently executed. They stand 18.5 cm high.
These early candlesticks rarely come to the market, sometimes when they do, they have been previously owned by Robert Thompson's own staff, and they acquired them as a gift from him, as he was quite a generous employer. They are very highly sought after; it is near impossible to find these pieces now as the serious collectors tend to hang onto them as they're such rare pieces.
They will be very carefully packaged and sent via the Royal Mail's 'Special Delivery' service.
